The Cotswolds is an area regarded by many as the most picturesque in England. On our tour we leave the motorway behind and take to the country lanes, visiting three of the most famous and beautiful Cotswold villages.
Our first stop is in the picturesque town of Burford, which is considered one of the loveliest Cotswold villages. Burford was the first Cotswold town to be granted a charter, and was given the right to hold a market and collect tolls from anyone wishing to trade in the town, making it an important coach town. Burford's distinctictive main street is long and steep with beautiful 14th ~ 16th Century houses, shops, tea rooms and inns.
Our second stop is in the village of 'Bourton on the Water' known as the 'Venice of the Cotswolds'. Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, Bourton-on-the-Water is built almost exclusively in warm yellow Cotswold stone, its architectural style such as dormer windows are typical of the Cotswolds. The village has 'something for everyone all year round' with an array of different museums as well as shops, resturants and inns. Here you can enjoy lunch and explore the village. Visit Birdland, a beautiful park and gardens containing over five hundred birds; the Perfumery Exhibition; Bourton Model Railway; Cotswold Pottery; Cotswold Motor Museum and The Model Village (a replica model village of Bourton on the Water).
Finally we make a stop in 'Stow on the Wold', this is the highest point on the Cotswolds (800m) it was here that the last battle of the English War took place and the Royalist Hotel claims to be England's oldest pub, with some of the timber dating back to the 10th Century. Stow on the Wold is an important shopping centre and is home to many antique shops, art galleries, gift shops and crafts shops. Why not end your day in the Cotswold with a traditional cream tea from one of the quaint little tea rooms!
