PORTSMOUTH & ISLE OF WIGHT

The Naval Dockyard is home to 3 historic ships and a number of museums and you could easily spend a full day at any one of the many attractions.

Visit Henry VIII's Mary Rose which sunk in 1545, after lying on the seabed for 437 years it was raised and now the slow restoration process is underway.

Visit The Warrior, England's first ironclad warship which was first launched in 1860. You will be able to explore the decks and experience something of what life was like onboard for the severn hundred man crew.

Visit The Victory, which was Lord Nelson's flag ship during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Flying the famous signal 'England expects that every man will do his duty' the British although out numbered by the Spanish and French won the day. Lord Nelson was hit by a musket ball and died aboard his beloved ship. The Victory is the oldest commissioned warship in the world. Discover more on a guided tour around the ship, which was once home to over 850 men and boys.

As well as the three ships you can also visit the Royal Naval Museum and discover 800 years of naval history.

Outside the Naval Dockyards you can enjoy a harbour cruise which offers a closer view of the naval dockyards and various modern naval ships. Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth on 7th February 1812 and today you can visit the Museum which recreates the Regency style from that era. Visit the Submarine Museum, a unique opportunity to go onboard a submarine, and the Marines Museum. From Portsmouth you can also take the ferry across to the Isle of Wight and explore the local seaside resort of Ryde. (The crossing takes just over 20 minutes.)

THE SPINNAKER TOWER

The Spinnaker Tower is a new icon in Portsmouth. Soaring 170 m high, this striking tower offers spectacular views over the south coast. The external panoramic glass lift travels to the 3 viewing platforms where you can literally 'walk on air' across the exciting glass floor, learn about the history of the harbour and experience the 'wind in your hair' as viewing deck 3 is open the the elements.
