OXFORD
Oxford is famous for its prestegious university, which is the oldest university in the English-speaking world (you can visit the various colleges although some charge entrance fees). Oxford is known as 'The City of Dreaming Spires' because of the harmonious architecture of the university buildings. You can appreciate the beauty of Oxford by taking in the view from Carfax Tower and taking in the sights on a bus tour or walking tour. Visit The Oxford Story which recreates student life throughout the years. Magdalen College, the site of William Morris's first workshop, Bodleian Library and the Ashmolean Museum are also well worth a visit.
One of the main Colleges to visit is Christ Church, founded in 1525, it has the largest quadrangle of any college. Visit Tom Tower, which houses the Great Tom, the 18,000 pound bell used in the past to sound curfew and the closing of the college gates. Visit Christ Church Cathedral which is England's smallest cathedral.
BLENHEIM PALACE
Situated just 8 miles from Oxford the Palace is home to the 11th Duke of Marlborough and the birth place of Sir Winston Churchill. This magnificent Palace is set in a beautiful parkland of 2100 acres, which was landscaped by Capability Brown in the 1760s. Building of the Palace began in 1705 and the name Blenheim derives from a decisive battle that took place on the 13th August 1704 on the north bank of the Danube, near a small village called Blindheim or Blenheim. Here John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, won a great allied victory over the forces of Louis XIV thus saving Europe from French domination. A Palace not to be missed.
